Best Time of Day to Water

The ideal time to run your irrigation system is: Between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM

Morning watering allows moisture to soak into the soil before the heat of the day causes evaporation. It also gives grass blades time to dry, reducing the risk of fungal diseases.

Avoid watering during the hottest part of the afternoon or late in the evening whenever possible.

Different Area Need Different Amounts of Water

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is assuming every part of the landscape needs the same watering schedule.

Smart Watering Tips for Seattle Homeowners

A few simple habits can make a big difference:

Water deeply instead of daily

Adjust your irrigation schedule as temperatures change

Raise your mower height during summer to help shade the soil

Keep mulch around planting beds to retain moisture

Check your sprinkler system regularly for broken heads or leaks

Don’t rely on a fixed timer all summer—your landscape’s needs change with the weather

A swimming pool can completely transform a backyard, but the pool itself is only part of the experience. The most memorable outdoor spaces combine the pool with thoughtful landscaping, functional hardscapes, outdoor lighting, and comfortable gathering areas that make the entire property feel like a private resort.

For homeowners in Seattle, Bellevue, and throughout the Pacific Northwest, pool landscaping requires a unique approach. The region’s wet winters, mild summers, and varied terrain make proper planning essential. When designed correctly, a pool landscape not only enhances the appearance of your property but also improves usability, safety, privacy, and long-term value.

Whether you’re building a new pool or upgrading an existing one, these pool landscaping ideas can help you create a backyard that is beautiful and functional year-round.

Why Pool Landscaping Matters

Many homeowners focus their attention on the pool design itself and leave the surrounding landscape as an afterthought. In reality, the landscaping often determines how much enjoyment you get from the investment.

A well-designed pool landscape creates a seamless connection between the pool, home, and outdoor living areas. It provides places to relax, entertain guests, enjoy family time, and extend your living space outdoors. Professional pool landscaping can also:

Increase property value

Improve safety around the pool

Enhance privacy

Reduce maintenance

Improve drainage and water management

Create a more luxurious outdoor environment

The most successful projects view the pool as one element within a complete outdoor living design.

Start with the Pool Patio

The patio serves as the foundation of any pool landscape design. A properly sized patio provides room for lounge chairs, dining areas, outdoor kitchens, fire features, and walkways while creating visual balance around the pool.

In the Seattle and Bellevue area, concrete pavers are one of the most popular choices because they are durable, attractive, and perform well in the Pacific Northwest climate. Modern paver systems offer countless design possibilities while providing a slip-resistant surface around the pool.

Natural stone, porcelain pavers, and decorative concrete can also create beautiful results depending on the desired style and budget. One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is not allowing enough patio space. While the pool may be the focal point, most of the time spent outdoors actually occurs around the pool rather than in it.

Create Privacy Around the Pool

Privacy is one of the most requested features in pool landscape design. A backyard pool should feel like a retreat, not a space where neighbors have a direct view into your outdoor activities. Several landscaping elements can help create privacy:

Evergreen screening

Layered planting beds

Decorative fencing

Trellises

Pergolas

Privacy walls

Strategic landscape lighting

Combining hardscape and planting features often produces the most attractive and effective results. In the Pacific Northwest, evergreen plantings are especially valuable because they provide year-round screening and visual interest.

Select Plants That Thrive Around Pools

The right plant material can soften hardscape areas while creating texture, color, and seasonal interest. Popular pool landscaping plants for Seattle and Bellevue include:

Ornamental grasses

Japanese maples

Hydrangeas

Lavender

Boxwood

Arborvitae

Evergreen shrubs

Ferns

These plants perform well in the Pacific Northwest while providing relatively low maintenance. When selecting plants near a pool, it is important to avoid species that produce excessive leaf drop, fruit, or seed pods, as these can increase cleaning requirements.

Add Outdoor Lighting for Evening Enjoyment

Outdoor lighting is often what transforms a beautiful backyard into a truly exceptional one. While landscaping creates visual appeal during the day, lighting brings the space to life after sunset. Professional landscape lighting can:

Improve safety around walkways and steps

Highlight architectural features

Illuminate planting beds

Create ambiance around the pool

Extend the usable hours of the outdoor space

Many homeowners are surprised by how dramatically lighting enhances the appearance and functionality of their backyard. A thoughtfully illuminated pool landscape often becomes the most impressive feature of the property after dark.

Incorporate Fire Features

One of the most popular trends in pool landscaping is combining water and fire elements within the same design. Fire features create a natural gathering place while extending the usability of outdoor spaces into cooler evenings. Popular options include:

Fire pits

Fire tables

Outdoor fireplaces

Linear fire features

The contrast between water and fire creates visual interest while enhancing the overall atmosphere of the backyard. In the Pacific Northwest climate, fire features can significantly increase the amount of time homeowners spend outdoors throughout the year.

Design a Complete Outdoor Living Space

Today’s pool landscapes are about much more than swimming.
Many homeowners want their backyard to function as a complete outdoor living environment. Popular additions include:

Outdoor kitchens

Covered patios

Pergolas

Dining areas

Lounge spaces

Entertainment areas

Integrated audio systems

When these elements are planned together, the result is a cohesive design that feels intentional and inviting. A pool should complement the outdoor living experience rather than dominate it.

Most are actively planning a project and trying to find the right company to trust with their home. Whether it is a new paver patio, front entry walkway, driveway, or complete outdoor living space, choosing the right paving contractor can have a major impact on both the appearance and long-term performance of the project.

In the Seattle and Bellevue area, paving projects require far more than simply laying pavers. The Pacific Northwest climate creates unique challenges that demand proper drainage planning, quality base preparation, and installation methods designed to handle years of rainfall and seasonal ground movement. A beautiful patio or driveway should not only look impressive when it is completed, but continue performing well for years without settling, drainage issues, or premature wear.

For homeowners investing in outdoor living spaces, finding the right paving contractor is one of the most important decisions in the entire process.

A Quality Paving Project Starts Below the Surface

One of the biggest misconceptions homeowners have about paving projects is believing the visible surface is the most important part of the installation. In reality, the long-term success of a paver patio or driveway is determined by everything underneath it.

In Seattle, Bellevue, Tacoma, and Everett, heavy rainfall and saturated soil conditions can quickly expose shortcuts in installation quality. Without proper excavation, grading, and drainage, even the most expensive pavers can begin shifting, sinking, or holding water over time.

An experienced paving contractor understands that every successful project begins with proper site preparation. This includes evaluating soil conditions, removing unstable material, compacting base layers correctly, and ensuring water can properly move away from both the hardscape and the home itself.

Many paving failures are not caused by the pavers themselves. They happen because corners were cut where homeowners cannot easily see them.

This is why choosing a contractor based solely on the lowest bid can often become far more expensive in the long run.

Questions Homeowners Should Ask Before Hiring a Paving Contractor

Before selecting a paving contractor, homeowners should take time to understand how the company approaches installation, drainage, and long-term durability. A reputable contractor should be comfortable explaining their excavation process, drainage planning, material recommendations, and design capabilities.

“How do I turn my backyard into a space we actually use?”

It’s the question we hear most from Seattle-area homeowners. And the answer might surprise you; start with a patio.

A patio does more than add hardscape, it brings structure, purpose, and daily joy to your outdoor space. From early-morning coffee to late-night fire pits, your patio becomes the anchor where real life happens outside.

At Malone’s Landscape, we’ve designed and built custom patios for homeowners in Bellevue, Redmond, Sammamish and greater Seattle areas transforming open yards into personal sanctuaries. Here’s why it’s the smartest place to begin.

The Foundation of Functional Outdoor Living

Create a space that anchors life outdoors, rain or shine. Without a patio, your yard is just open space. With one, it becomes a destination. Whether you’re hosting a summer dinner party or letting the kids run wild, a patio gives your outdoor area structure, zones, and intention.

From casual lounge setups to full-scale kitchens, patios frame how your yard works and feel like a true extension of your home.

Built for the Pacific Northwest (Not Just Perfect Weather)

A great patio adapts to the way you actually live not just summer weekends. Seattle’s climate calls for smart design: covered spaces, drainage solutions, and materials that can handle moisture and wear.

Want to use your outdoor space even in the rainy season? Add a pergola or roof structure, incorporate heating or ceiling fans, and your patio becomes usable all year. We design with real life in mind, blending comfort and durability in every detail.

Personalized to Your Lifestyle & Style

Your home is one-of-a-kind. Your patio should be, too. We don’t do cookie-cutter. Every patio we design starts with how you live:

Do you need space for large gatherings?

Prefer cozy, intimate seating for quiet evenings?

Want a seamless indoor-outdoor flow?

Then we shape the style around your taste from the natural elegance of stone to the modern lines of pavers or the affordability of stamped concrete. We’ll guide you through materials, layout, and add-ons like built-in seating, lighting, fire features, and more.

Everything is chosen with intention, so the result reflects not just good design, but your daily life.

A Smart Investment in Home Value & Daily Joy

The right patio does more than beautify your yard. It adds usable square footage, improves resale appeal, and makes your home more livable day to day.

It’s not just a feature, it’s a lifestyle upgrade.

This Is Where Outdoor Living Begins

At Malone’s Landscape, we believe great outdoor spaces start with a strong foundation. That foundation is your patio. It sets the tone, defines the experience, and transforms your yard from “someday” into a space you’ll use every day.

If you’re ready to reimagine what outdoor living could look like, we’re here to help!

Transforming your outdoor space into a cozy and inviting haven can be easily achieved with the addition of a beautiful fire pit. A fire pit not only adds warmth and ambiance to your landscape but also creates a gathering spot that draws family and friends together. Whether you want to host memorable events or simply relax under the stars, a well-designed fire pit can elevate your outdoor living experience. In this blog post, we will explore the various ways a fire pit can compliment your landscape design and offer tips for creating a stunning and functional fire feature.

Enhance your Outdoor Landscaping with a Beautiful Fire Pit

There are several reasons to consider adding a fire pit or outdoor fireplace to your yard.

Extending the Outdoor Season

One of the most significant advantages of having a fire pit is its ability to extend the usability of your outdoor space. As the evenings grow cooler as we head toward the fall, a fire pit becomes a central gathering spot, allowing you to enjoy your garden well into the chilly evenings. Picture yourself wrapped in a blanket, toasting marshmallows, and sharing stories around the crackling flames—truly an experience that brings people closer together and creates lasting memories.

Enhanced Aesthetics

Beyond its functional benefits, a well-designed fire pit can be an exquisite focal point in your outdoor landscape or backyard patio. Choose a fire pit that complements your garden’s style and blends harmoniously with the surroundings. Our design team will help you find a style that compliments your existing elements, from rustic stone to modern metal designs. You can further enhance the aesthetics by adding seating options, such as stone benches or Adirondack chairs, to create a cozy and inviting area around the fire pit.

Increased Property Value

Investing in landscaping improvements, like a fire pit, can significantly boost your property’s value. A beautifully crafted fire feature adds curb appeal and makes your property stand out among others in the neighborhood. Potential buyers often envision themselves enjoying outdoor spaces, making a fire pit a compelling selling point for future real estate transactions.

Cooking and Entertaining

A fire pit doesn’t just serve as a source of warmth and relaxation; it can also be used for cooking and entertaining. Many fire pit designs allow you to cook delicious meals over an open flame, offering a unique outdoor cooking experience. You can roast marshmallows, cook hotdogs, or even prepare gourmet meals on a grill grate. Moreover, a fire pit provides a focal point for outdoor gatherings, such as birthday parties, family reunions, or intimate date nights.

Creating a Welcoming Atmosphere

The mesmerizing glow and crackling sound of a fire pit create a soothing and inviting atmosphere in your outdoor space. It encourages relaxation, making it an ideal spot for unwinding after a long day or hosting intimate conversations with loved ones. A fire pit’s soft illumination also adds a touch of enchantment to your garden during the night, bringing a sense of magic and tranquility.

Customization and Functionality

Fire pits come in various sizes and shapes, allowing you to customize them according to your space and needs. A round fire pit promotes a sense of togetherness, while a linear fire pit can create a modern and elegant look. You can even opt for a dual-purpose fire pit that converts into a table when not in use. Additionally, fire pits can be fueled by wood, natural gas, or propane, catering to your preferences and lifestyle.

Incorporating a beautiful fire pit into your outdoor landscaping can elevate your outdoor living experience in numerous ways. From extending the usability of your garden to enhancing its aesthetics and increasing property value, a well-designed fire pit becomes an asset that enriches your life and the lives of those around you. Embrace the warmth, create magical moments, and bask in the charm of a beautiful fire pit in your outdoor sanctuary.

Let us help you design the perfect fire pit for your backyard

Create an inviting focal point with a custom gas or wood-burning fire pit for friends and family to gather and enjoy your outdoor living space long after the sun goes down. There is nothing like the warmth and glow that an outdoor fire pit provides to keep your guests warm and toasty throughout the evening. We can help you design and build the perfect fire pit for your backyard. Contact us today to get started.

A lush green lawn is often the dream of every homeowner or business owner looking to enhance their property’s curb appeal. However, not every landscape is conducive to growing grass.

Whether it’s due to poor soil quality, insufficient sunlight, or heavy foot traffic, some areas present unique challenges. But fear not! As a leading landscaping company, we have compiled a list of innovative ideas to help you transform these challenging spaces into stunning focal points.

Get ready to explore creative solutions that will elevate the aesthetics and functionality of your residential or commercial property.

Introduce Rock Gardens

Rock gardens are an excellent choice for areas where grass struggles to thrive. By carefully selecting an assortment of rocks, boulders, and pebbles, you can create an eye-catching landscape feature that requires minimal maintenance.

Enhance the appeal by incorporating drought-tolerant plants such as succulents, cacti, or ornamental grasses. The result? A stunning and low-maintenance garden that adds texture and interest to your property.

Design with Mulch or Gravel

Mulch or gravel can be a game-changer for areas where grass won’t grow. These materials not only provide a clean and uniform appearance but also help retain moisture and prevent weed growth. Opt for natural wood chips, decorative bark, or colored gravel to complement your property’s aesthetic.

With proper edging, these materials can define pathways, borders, or create distinct zones within your landscape.

Create a Sustainable Xeriscape

Xeriscaping, or water-wise landscaping, is a fantastic option for regions facing water scarcity or areas where grass struggles to survive. By incorporating native and drought-resistant plants, you can reduce water usage while adding beauty and biodiversity to your landscape.

Consult with our experts to select the best-suited plants for your region and create a design that embraces the unique characteristics of your property.

Install Hardscape Features

Maximize the potential of areas where grass won’t grow by incorporating hardscape features. Paved walkways, patios, or decks can transform these spaces into functional and inviting areas for relaxation or entertainment. Consider materials like natural stone, brick, or pavers to enhance the visual appeal. By integrating seating areas, fire pits, or outdoor kitchens, you can create an inviting outdoor living space that complements your property.

Focus on Ornamental Features

Turn your attention to eye-catching ornamental features that can transform even the most challenging areas. Sculptures, water fountains, bird baths, or decorative containers can bring character and charm to otherwise barren spots. These elements add visual interest and create focal points that divert attention from the lack of grass.

Ready to Transform Your Landscaping?

Don’t let areas where grass won’t grow dampen your landscaping aspirations. By embracing these creative ideas, you can transform these challenging spaces into beautiful and functional areas that enhance your property’s overall appeal.

Remember, every landscape is unique, and it’s essential to tailor your design choices to your specific needs and preferences. For expert guidance and professional assistance, consult with our experienced landscaping team to bring your vision to life. Let’s turn your landscaping challenges into opportunities for creative and stunning transformations! Reach out to us today.

When it’s Winter in the Northwest, activities tend to move inside. It can be easy to forget about the beautiful landscaping you were enjoying a few months back.

However, the Winter is still a great time to think about what you need to do for your backyard or commercial property. You’ll keep the area safe to enjoy throughout the Winter and even get it ready for an easier transition to the Spring months.

Here are some things we’d recommend doing during the Winter to keep up with your landscaping.

Think About Your Hardscapes

When the leaves fall off the trees and snow hits the ground, you might notice that your backyard looks completely empty. If your landscaping is mostly made up of soft materials like greenery and plants, there won’t be much left during the Winter month.

To keep your landscaping interesting and appealing all year round, you’ll want to consider some hardscape options that add visual interest to your landscape.

What kind of hardscapes should you use? We love adding in benches, a trellis, or a pergola.

If you have potted plants outside, consider using decorative pots that will add some extra style to your area.

Applying Mulch

Your landscape needs a little bit of extra protection during the colder months. It helps to add some mulch around trees, plants, and shrubs. You just need about a 2-inch layer to maintain a uniform soil temperature and help reduce water loss.

Trimming & Pruning

The Winter months are an excellent time to trim your trees. Once the leaves fall, you can really see how the branches are growing in and spot any potential problem areas.

You can also spend some time pruning your bushes and plants. However, we do recommend you do this towards the end of Winter. This way, your plants will only be exposed to cold weather for a little while before they get ready for the new growth that Spring brings.

Handling Snow Damage

Whenever snow appears, there’s always a bit of a rush to get it cleared away. When you next see snow, pay attention to any branches that may be collecting snow loads. These might need to be trimmed to avoid big, dangerous piles.

While you also want to use salt on your walkways during snow storms or chilly days, be careful about getting the salt on your plants or trees. That salt can cause a lot of damage to the soil. If you’re not able to avoid getting salt on the soil, try to flush the soil afterward with plenty of water (when it’s warm enough, that is.)

Aerate & Fertilize

Before the first big freeze, you’ll want to make sure that you get someone to aerate and fertilize your lawn. This makes sure that when the weather starts to warm, your lawn is able to take in the fertilizer right away and get back to its original glory.

It’s also helpful to cut your grass a bit shorter than you normally would in the Winter to protect the grass from too much cold damage. We recommend cutting between 2 and 2.5 inches.

Need Winter Landscaping?

If you feel like you need a bit more help with your Winter landscaping, please reach out to us. This is also a great time to start thinking about and planning for any Spring and Summer projects you have on the horizon. We’d love to help!
