Outdoor living spaces are one of the top trends in landscape renovation and home remodeling. While the definition of what an outdoor living space means to every client can be very different our design approach is the same for everyone. We recommend focusing on who will be using the space (adults, kids, pets, etc.), what activities will be important (cooking, lounging, entertaining, swimming, dining, etc.), what special features are desired (pool, spa, kitchen, fire pit, artificial turf, waterfall, lighting etc.), are there any special property concerns (maintenance, property lines, privacy screens, views, drainage, access etc.), and of course what is your budget.
Here are a few top trends that might get you inspired to create your perfect outdoor living space.
Artificial Turf
Artificial turf has come a long way and these days it looks so good sometimes it’s hard to tell that it’s not real. Add in the benefit of no mowing or fertilizing and you have a great choice for any busy homeowner. There is even special pet turf designed specifically for pets. Check out K9 Grass from Forever Lawn. Adding artificial turf to your outdoor living space may be just what you need!
Garden Art
Garden art can be a great way to add a personal design element to your outdoor living space. Consider a decorative privacy panel with horizontal wood slat panels to add a contemporary element of warmth and beauty to the barbeque area as well as privacy from neighbors. Try a sculpture or birdbath or even a unique glazed pot with succulents, be creative and find something special and you will be rewarded. Patio Lights
Patio lights are a must if you have a dining area or want to add ambiance lighting to your outdoor living space. Lighting can make a huge difference on how a landscape and patio area feel and now with led bulbs it is a lot less expensive to operate than it used to be. These Meteor Lights from frontgate.com are a beautiful addition to this seating area and a little different than the traditional string lights. Adding lanterns and candles as well as a fire feature can really amp up the atmosphere for a great night of outdoor entertainment with family and friends.
Pools & Spas
Pools and spas are always a popular landscape design element and can really turn your landscape into your own private retreat. Who needs to travel anywhere when you have the perfect resort in your own backyard. Add a waterfall, slide or swim up bar and your family will have the perfect place to entertain family and friends and enjoy incredible memories together. Pools and spas can take a bit longer to design and install and typically require a permit so if this is something you are considering for next summer you will want to get the ball rolling this fall or winter.
